Mesoporous silica-based nanomaterials have been widely developed as novel drug transport nanocarriers due to their biocompatibility, chemical and mechanical stability, easy functionalization ability, large pore volume, and tunable pore diameter, exhibiting excellent drug loading capacity and high encapsulation efficiency of a wide range of cargoes. In the past few decades, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted enormous attention because of distinct optical properties such as nonblinking, nonphotobleaching, high chemical stability, and sharp emission bands. In this research, we prepared mesoporous silica-coated UCNPs (UCmS) for near-infrared-mediated combination cancer therapy. In addition, surface modification, singlet oxygen generation, and in vitro cytotoxicity were conducted to evaluate the antitumor efficacy of UCmS-based nanocarriers.
