Phenolic resins are thermosets and have excellent heat resistance and mechanical properties. However, due to its thermosetting properties, it is difficult to recycle after use, and 15-20% of the total production is discarded in the form of sprues and runners. In this experiment, we will grind the waste sprue and runner and blend it with PP (Polypropylene). Since phenolic resin has low dispersibility and compatibility in PP, which is a hydrophobic polymer, MA-g-PP (Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene) was added as a commercial agent to improve it. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to analyse the size of the waste phenolic resin particles and their compatibility with PP. The thermal properties were analysed by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and TGA (Thermalgravimetric Analyser). Mechanical properties were evaluated by universal testing machine (UTM) and Notched Izod Impact Tester.
