Terphenyl-based Anion Exchange Membranes based on Diallyldialkylammonium Cyclopolymerization for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

In order to produce green hydrogen, many studies are being conducted on anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), which combines the advantages of both PEMWE and AWE. AEMWE requires an anion exchange membrane with high ionic conductivity and appropriate mechanical strength, as well as alkaline stability. This study proposes an anion exchange membrane structure with these characteristics through synthesis of terphenyl-based backbone and subsequent quaternization and cyclopolymization of diallyldialkylammonium functional group. Four types of membranes having high mechanical strength were synthesized according to the backbone structure and polymerization method. m-Terphenyl, p-Terphenyl based membrane, blending membrane with m-Terphenyl based polymer and p-Terphenyl based polymer, copolymer membrane between m- and p-Terhenyl were prepared. Fabricated membranes showed various physical properties and high conductivity characteristics depending on individual organic pendants.
