Synthesis of Polyimides containing Hydroxyl Groups for Enhanced Gas Separation Membrane

Polyimides are high-performance materials favored in various industries due to their high thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. They are also used in membrane-based gas separation applications. Integrating polar groups into the polyimide backbone can enhance gas separation performance. Among these, the hydroxyl group can form interchain hydrogen bonds and induce CTCs interaction, leading to a polyimide with a high chain packing density. This is expected to result in improved gas-pair selectivity.
In this study, we synthesized a dianhydride containing a hydroxyl group and then synthesized polyimide through a condensation reaction with diamine. Our hydroxyl-functionalized polyimide exhibited enhanced gas permeation and separation performance. The chemical structure of the polyimide was confirmed by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Its thermal properties were analyzed using XRD, DSC, and TGA. These results suggest that our polyimide has potential applications in the field of gas separation membrane.
