Selective Detection of 2-Octyl-3-Isothiazolinone Using Imidazole-Functionalized Graphene Nanohybrids: Design, Synthesis, and Electrochemical Analysis

Receptors for selectively recognizing the biocide 2-octyl-3-isothiazolinone (OIT) were designed based on potential intermolecular interactions, with efficacy evaluated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Each receptor had an imidazole moiety for covalent bonding with graphene and a side functional group for noncovalent interaction with OIT. After screening, receptors were synthesized and attached to graphene for OIT detection. Among the receptor/graphene nanohybrids (RGHs), RGH3 and RGH4, with alkyl groups showing high chemical affinities for OIT, were the most promising. Their electrochemical response was influenced by receptor type, OIT concentration, and applied potential, with optimal detection at a scan rate of 25 mV/s and potentials of -0.75, 0.08, and 1.30 V (vs Ag/AgNO3). Using five different RGHs at varied potentials, OIT was effectively distinguished from interferences. This approach can be adapted to develop novel receptors for other substances.
