The aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) has recently garnered significant attention due to its composition solely of water, thereby possessing highly biocompatible and eco-friendly properties. However, the utilization of ATPS has been limited by the extreme difficulty in forming processable and controllable systems, stemming from its poor stability. In this study, to address this issue, we successfully prepare stable and processable aqueous gels whose internal structure can be tuned via photopolymerization of a stable water-in-water emulsion. This method of preparing aqueous gels is expected to be the next step for ATPS as it provides a versatile platform for a variety of applications such as drug patch systems, artificial cell reactors, cell growth support, and even semi-solid aqueous electrolytes by providing different internal morphologies and mechanical properties.
