Direct Grafting of Organic Ligands onto Inorganic Nanocrystals for Enhanced Electrical Interactions with Conjugated Polymers

The growing interest in colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) is due to their varied electrical and mechanical properties, leading to increased research on interactions with conjugated polymers (CPs). Enhancing electrical interactions requires removing the insulating aliphatic ligands used in NC synthesis and attaching desired CPs to the NC surface. While many studies have achieved close NC-CP contact using bifunctional ligands, an alternative method is needed to improve packing density without bifunctional ligands.
Herein, we directly graft organic ligands (e.g, 1-octyne) to the NC surface via a catalyst free click reaction. It highlights the atomic scale introducing functionalities (e.g., N3) on NC surface by inorganic ligand treatment. We have demonstrated these processes through physical and optical properties using UV-Vis and PL, as well as binding characteristics using analyses such as FT-IR, XPS and NMR.
