Membranes are essential components used for separation of substances. Conventional methods for producing membranes are characterized by low connectivity between pores. In this study, we developed a simple crystallization-based process to manufacture nanoporous membranes with co-continuous phases. The membrane was fabricated by solvent penetration into a polypropylene film and a subsequent melt crystallization, followed by selective extraction of solvent crystals to generate open pores inside. As a solvent, we used aliphatic lipids. The pore structure was controlled by adjusting the penetration temperature of polypropylene film. Under the condition of solvent penetration at 160 ℃, continuous pore structure and good porosity were observed and the filtration performance was also excellent. By varying penetration heating history, membranes with higher porosity and a wider distribution of pores could be fabricated. This method holds potential for applications in batteries and water treatment.
