Recent studies on bottlebrush polymers (BBPs) have generated great interest in bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs). The project focused on generating smaller-sized patterns, a task that proves difficult with linear PS-b-PMMA, by adopting a bottlebrush block copolymer system. The domain size in bottlebrush block copolymers, determined by the degree of polymerization of the backbone, allows for significantly reduced domain spacing compared to linear block copolymers of identical molecular weight. PS and PMMA macromonomers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), leading to the successful synthesis of bottlebrush block copolymers through sequential ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Neutralization of the substrate facilitated microphase separation in the perpendicularly oriented bottlebrush block copolymers, a finding substantiated by AFM and SEM analyses.
