Toward the Equilibrium: Stability of Initial Solvent-Driven Non-Equilibrium Effect on Polymer Nanocomposites

In polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), polymers are adsorbed on the surface of particles, and adsorbed polymers can affect the physical properties of PNCs. Previous studies investigated how the change of experimental parameters such as size/shape/chemistry of particles/polymers can control adsorbed polymer, and the investigation of these intrinsic parameters assumed that PNCs are in equilibrium states. However, recent studies have shown that the final states of PNCs can be path-dependent, induced by the non-equilibrium state of adsorbed polymers.
Our previous study reported that the formation of adsorbed polymers in PNC can be affected by casting solvent, inducing a non-equilibrium effect on the properties of PNCs. In this work, we investigate the stability of the casting solvent-driven non-equilibrium effect on PNCs by redispersing PNCs with different solvents. We found that casting solvent varied the strength of particle/polymer interaction, affecting the stability of non-equilibrium states of PNCs after the redispersing process.
