Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is a prospective method for producing sustainable chemicals in energy conversion. In CO2R, controlling the selectivity of products and improving stability are highly significant challenges. In this study, we aim to control product selectivity by placing a cross-linked polycation layer on the working electrode, which has dispersed nanoparticles. By modifying the crosslinking density of the polycation layer resulted in the control of the Debye length between the catalyst and the polycation layer. As the polycation, we used 1-[2-acryloloxyethyl]-3-butylimidazolium (AEBI), which includes an imidazolium group that increase local CO2 solubility and promotes CO2 reduction. Furthermore, we also adjusted hydrophobicity of the cross-linked polycation layer by varying counter ion and found the optimal combination for CO2 reduction.
