Color Intensity Modulation in Electrochromic Device Based on Cholesteric Color Reflectors for Use in Reflective Display

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have attracted much attention for potential use in color displays but it is still challenging to fabricate full color display based on ECD due to the limitations in coloration range. Here, we propose a new concept of ECD that can achieve extended degree of coloration range by using color reflector patterns as intensity-tunable color pixels. Color reflector patterns are constructed through photolithography of chiral reactive mesogen layer coated on homogeneous alignment layer, polyimide. An ECD comprising ITO/electrolyte/tungsten oxide/ITO/Glass was subsequently constructed on the color reflector patterns. This device shows the original color of color reflectors at the pristine state and color intensity is modulated by applying voltage across the ECD. Our concept of incorporating color reflector in ECD provides a novel way of achieving full color reflective-type display with wide coloration range and the design flexibility.
