A facile synthesis of well-ordered Janus bottlebrush polymers by polymerization-induced microphase separation

Bottlebrush polymers feature polymeric side chains on every repeating unit of the backbone. The steric congestion between the side chains stretches the backbone and induces a cylindrical conformation. Janus bottlebrush polymers, a subclass of bottlebrush copolymers, have two different side chains grated onto each repeating unit. The pre-organization of side chains along the backbone facilitates the self-assembly process, resulting in more ordered structures compared to linear polymers. However, the preparation of nanostructured Janus bottlebrush polymeric materials typically involves two separate steps; polymerization and processing, which hinder efficient production.
In this study, we present a facile method for preparing well-ordered Janus bottlebrush polymers by polymerization-induced microphase separation (PIMS). The synthetic routes and microphase behavior including structure evolution will be discussed in detail.
