A Refined IEG Strategy Towards the Synthesis and Structural Diversification of Discrete, Sequence-Defined Macromolecules

Synthesis of discrete polymers with high molecular weight, at the same time, highly diverse side chains tethered at precisely defined locations, provides potential for various applications (i.e. digital information storage). Despite extensive studies on strategies such as esterification, it remains a challenge because of the inherent limitation on the range of side chains that can be employed. Here, we report the Passerini- three component reaction (P-3CR) in conjunction with iterative exponential growth (IEG) to synthesize homopolymers with up to 63 repeating units in a 2n-1 fashion. The strategy also enabled the facile fabrication of side-chain sequence regulated polymers and polymers encoding decimal sequence, which serves as a platform which can be envisaged for applications including data storage materials.
