Visible-light-driven photocatalysis developed in 2008 has been successfully merged with controlled radical polymerization to enable the easy preparation of well-defined polymers in mild and user-friendly reaction conditions. In particular, water-soluble photocatalysts have been used to modify and functionalize various biomolecules. However, currently, only a few available photocatalysts exist and their photophysical properties in the presence of biomolecules have been overlooked, which limits the wide applicability of visible-light-driven photocatalysis in an aqueous system. We present water-soluble cyanoarene-based purely organic photocatalysts developed in our laboratory and several photocatalytic reactions. For example, a protein-based gel could be prepared without pre-modification of the starting protein molecule. Photophysical properties in the presence of varying concentrations of proteins including bovine serum albumin were also examined.
