In response to regulations on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a non-fluorinated transparent polyimide (PI) film was developed in this study to replace the commonly used fluorinated colorless PI films in flexible displays. The non-fluorinated transparent PI was synthesized, utilizing diamines containing strong electron-withdrawing groups and dianhydrides based on aromatic and alicyclic moieties. The resulting film, with a thickness of 50 um, exhibited balanced optical and mechanical properties, including a yellow Index of 1.3 and a Young’s modulus nearly 5 GPa. Additionally, it demonstrated exceptional folding reliability, enduring 300,000 folding/unfolding cycles. Remarkably, the developed optical film showed superior light resistance under UV exposure compared to conventional non-fluorinated and fluorinated colorless PI films. This study also proposes a mechanism for the significantly enhanced light resistance observed in the non-fluorinated transparent PI film.
