We introduce a robust antioxidant photon quencher to address the skin irritation and organic UV filter degradation caused by TiO2's photocatalytic activity. A metal phenolic network-cellulose nanofibril (MPN-CNF) was synthesized by binding polyphenols and metal ions to cellulose, creating a durable coating. FT-IR and TEM analyses confirmed MPN-CNF formation. Photoluminescence spectroscopy verified photon quenching in a TiO2/MPN-CNF suspension. UV-vis spectroscopy and SPF indexes demonstrated enhanced UV-blocking performance of avobenzone (Avb) in an Avb/MPN-CNF suspension. The MPN-CNF shows promise as a potent sun booster in sunblock systems combining Avb and TiO2, potentially improving sunscreen efficacy and skin protection.
