Metal ions in soil and water can cause health problems and environmental pollution. For these reasons, detecting metal ions in aqueous environments with high selectivity and sensitivity is crucial for environmental monitoring. Various studies have been conducted to detect metal ions, and many have used conjugated polymers. In this study, naphthalene diimide(NDI) with air stability and high electron affinity was selected as one of the building blocks for the polymer backbone to generate transport pathways for charge carriers. Ethylene glycol side chains were added to the NDI monomer, enhancing selective and high detection capabilities in aqueous environments due to the strong binding of the oxygen atoms in these side chains to metal ions. The NDI-based polymers in this study exhibited excellent performance in metal ion detection with high selectivity and sensitivity, presenting an efficient method for environmental applications and significantly contributing to environmental monitoring.
