This study presents an efficient method for producing and purifying gluconic acid (GA) from a crude solution produced via chemical methods. Our approach encompasses effectively utilizing a membrane-based ion-exchange and purification process, including a series of meticulously adjusted selective acidification and recycling steps with poly(4-styrene sulfonic acid) (H-PSS) and potassium gluconate. This strategic intervention involves an innovative, and scaled-up aqueous-ion exchange and membrane-reactor process in producing GA from potassium gluconate, effectively removing potassium ions and acidifying them. Subsequent concentration via reverse osmosis achieves an impressive 95% yield and an excellent 40-fold concentration of GA (>99.9% purity). Compared to existing conventional processes, this approach boasts an 80% reduction in energy consumption, an 84.6% yield, a purity of 99.9%, and a return on investment (ROI) of the 330 TPD (tone per day) plant was only 0.83 years.
