Organic photodetectors (OPDs) materials offer unique advantages, including solution processibility, and facile tunability of optical and electronic properties. These features enable their application in diverse fields such as image sensors, medical imaging and environmental monitoring. Traditional photomultiplication (PM) OPDs typically enhance device responsivity by achieving a homogeneous distribution (HD) of n-type dopants within a p-type polymer, surpassing the limit of external quantum efficiency (EQE). However, they face limitations of higher dark current and slower dynamic characteristics due to the inherent long lifetime of trapped electrons. To overcome these limitations, we synthesized a hydrophilic n-type dopant, creating a nonuniform distribution of acceptors in the active layer within a p-type polymer host, which led to the formation of vertical phase separation (VPS). This innovative approach holds the potential to enhance both the static and dynamic properties of OPDs.
