High Performance Stretchable PLED Enabled by Free-standing Liquid Metal Cathodes

Stretchable light-emitting diodes are the key components for realizing skin-like displays and optical biostimulation. All the stretchable light-emitting diodes reported to the date have poor performances, such as low brightness or low efficiency. Here we present free-standing, patterned bulk liquid metal cathodes that can be used in N2 filled condition, which can maximize the device performance. We show that the cathode has ideal materials properties such as low sheet resistance, negligible resistance change under strain, high reflectance, and low work function for efficient electron injection. As a result, highly efficient stretchable LEDs having low turn-on voltage, and high luminance can be achieved.
