The complex coacervates of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and Polydiallylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) were synthesized in this study. The CNC was performed acid hydrolysis to induce more sulfate group which carried a negative charge. The XPS results confirmed that CNC after acid hydrolysis showed a high percent of sulfur content compared to CNC. The increase in the percentage of sulfur indicated that the sulfate ester groups were introduced more. In addition, the zeta potential of CNC acid obtained from DLS equipment appeared to have more negative results, suggesting that the negative charge was from sulfate ester. After that, the cationic polymer PDADMAC was mixed with CNC to form electrostatic complexes in different mass ratios. The complex coacervation was verified using optical density, size, and complexation yield(%). Lastly, the synthesized complex coacervates were used for hydrogel preparation in further study.
