Elastic Photonic Crystals with Mechanochromism in Full Visible Range

Artificial mechanochromic structures utilize non-close-packed particle arrays in an elastic matrix, such as silica particles in a photo-polymerizable resin that becomes an elastomer. Achieving wide color changes and linear responses necessitates significant particle separation. However, previous methods have struggled to precisely control this separation, leading to significantly reduced reflection intensity in shifted stop bands.
This study presents a method to create solvent-free photonic composites with enhanced interparticle separation. Initially, elastic photonic composites with short separations are created using silica particles in an acrylate monomer. These composites are then soaked in acrylate monomer resin, expanding and increasing the lattice constant while maintaining high reflectivity in the red-shifted stop band. The resulting photonic composites retain higher reflectivity during compression-induced blue shifts of the stop band compared to those without lattice expansion.
