Natural DNA-Based Thermo-Responsive Bioplastics for Biodegradable Medical Devices

The growing threat of plastic pollution derived from disposable plastic products raises the emergency demand for developing sustainable sources of conventional plastics. Several nature-derived polymeric sources have been reported as alternatives to conventional plastic materials. Degradable bioplastics are suggested as a promising candidate for sustainable materials with their environment-friendly disposal process. Herein, we introduce the natural DNA-based bioplastics fabricated via the crosslinking process of extracted DNA. DNA bioplastics possess the functionalities of both DNA and conventional thermoplastic materials such as thermos-responsive expansion, solidification, and self-healing while preserving biodegradable attributes. We successfully demonstrated the DNA Bioplastic-based biomedical devices for practical applications. DNA-based materials as a sustainable source for conventional plastics will widen the field of biomedical materials.
