Chitosan is a natural biopolymer originated from chitin, which is utilized in a wide range of applications due to its antibacterial property. Additionally, the zwitterionic polymer, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC), exhibits excellent antifouling property attributed to the formation of a strong hydration layer. To apply these materials to coating applications, zwitterionic polymer-grafted chitosan was prepared via one-step in situ polymerization in aqueous solution. The as-synthesized polymer can be coated onto a polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane through covalent bonds, electrostatic interactions, and Van der Waals interactions. The coated RO membrane showed excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties against both bacteria and proteins compared to the uncoated RO membrane.
