Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is crucial for applications such as soft robotics, electronics, medical devices, and batteries. Traditional TPUs rely on specific soft segments like polyether, polyester, and polycarbonate polyols. We introduce a novel method for developing TPU elastomers with enhanced performance and functionalities using α, ω-hydroxyl end-functionalized polyacrylates. This method involves defect-free synthesis of these polyacrylates via visible-light-driven photoiniferter polymerization. By blending these functionalized polyacrylates with conventional polyols, we engineered TPUs with exceptional toughness and notable self-healing capabilities, traits rarely found in existing TPUs. Additionally, incorporating photo-crosslinkable acrylic monomers enabled the creation of TPUs with superior elastomeric properties and photopatterning capabilities. This innovative approach introduces novel soft segments, paving the way for advanced applications in polyurethane engineering.
