A MXene compound Nb2CTx (where, M denotes a transition metal, X is either carbon or nitrogen, and Tx is −OH, −F or −O−) was synthesized by selective etching of Al from Nb2AlC using an aqueous HF solution, and applied as a catalyst in combination with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) for the regeneration of I-/I-3–based redox mediators in hybrid solar cells (HSCs) with a basic configuration of glass/F-doped tin oxide (FTO)/TiO2:N719 dye:electrolyte/catalyst/FTO/glass. HSCs with pristine PEDOT:PSS and Nb2CTx MXene as catalyst layer showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.60% and 0.10%, respectively. However, a PCE of 5.36 % was achieved, when a mixing ratio of PEDOT:PSS and Nb2CTx MXene was optimized.
