Polyethylene (PE) and its copolymers are widely used commodity plastics due to their outstanding characteristics of low toxicity, excellent electric insulation, good chemical resistance, high mechanical durability, and ease of processing as well as low price. But, their high flammability is to be overcome for some applications such as wire and cable. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP), an inorganic salt of polyphosphoric acid and ammonia, is one of the flame-retardant (FR) used for various polymers. Recent studies showed that APP modified via ion exchange reaction with amines can act as effective intumescent FR for PP and PE. In this work, the APP was modified with melamine, and the melamine modified APP (MEL-APP) was incorporated into poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate) (EMA), one of the important ethylene copolymers, by melt mixing process in an internal mixer, and their flame-retardancy and mechanical properties were characterized by measurement of LOI and cone calorimetry analysis, and tensile testing, respectivley.
