Yielding behavior of concentrated Li-ion battery anode slurry using the squeeze-flow rheometer

The performance of Li-ion batteries has been reported to be related to the dispersion state of electrode components; active materials, conductive additives, and polymer binder. Therefore, understanding the interaction, structure, and properties of particles and polymers is demanded to improve the battery's performance and manufacturing ability. However, the direct observation is challenging because of the opaque nature of materials. Thus, the rheological properties of slurry are an important approach to investigating the microstructure of the slurry systems.
In this study, we investigated the yielding behavior of a concentrated slurry system depending on the characteristics of the polymer binder using the lab-made squeeze-flow rheometer. The result was compared to the stress-controlled rheometer. Based on the study, we suggest a potent approach to understanding the role of the polymer binder on the microstructure of particles and the yielding behavior of the concentrated anode slurry.
