Polyrotaxanes (PRx) are an interesting class of materials that can be integrated as slidable crosslinkers in the polymer matrices. The unique “pulley effect” of PRx has been harnessed to develop extraordinary tough polymers, scratch-healing coatings, and battery binders. Herein, we synthesize polyrotaxane-incorporating liquid crystal elastomers (PRx-LCEs) and correlate their viscoelastic properties with adhesion. Noticeably, the PRx-LCE offers a remarkable increment in dynamic soft elasticity compared to that of conventional LCE. Most importantly, the PRx-LCE demonstrates a significant enhancement in adhesion (probe-tack and peel tests) due to its extreme dynamic soft elasticity, and further exhibits the capability for switchable adhesion through temperature variation. The unique dynamic soft elasticity of PRx-LCE makes it a promising pressure-sensitive adhesive for applications demanding high and switchable adhesion, such as in displays, semiconductors, and medical industries.
