Carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites are extensively used in various fields, including automotive, aerospace, and sports. Among the many factors affecting these composites, the control of interfacial properties is crucial for their mechanical performance. To enhance the interfacial bonding strength of these composites, we explored a novel concept involving reactive polymeric sizing agents. Since sizing agents operate at the interface, their interactions with carbon fibers and the epoxy matrix are critical. We synthesized a series of copolymers of acrylonitrile and glycidyl methacrylate in various compositions using solution polymerization. The chemical compositions and sequences of the copolymers were analyzed using NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Additionally, we investigated the roles of the cyano and glycidyl groups in the copolymers regarding their reactivity and interaction with surface-modified carbon fibers through thermal, spectroscopic, and microscopic analyses.
