Elucidating the Exciton Dynamics in Hybrid Systems of Conjugated Polymers and Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Understanding photophysical effects of inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) on the exciton dynamics of conjugated polymer (CP) aggregates is a fascinating challenge in the field of CP-based optoelectronics because it may pave another way to further increase the device efficiencies. Here we prepared model hybrid aggregate systems of CPs and semiconductor NCs, and elucidated photophysical interactions between the components. Particularly, we discovered the unique radiative recombination pathway of CP singlet (S1) excitons induced by the structural and photophysical effects of the NCs; the conversion of CP S1 excitons having excess energy into polaron states was suppressed more efficiently compared to that in the neat CP aggregate systems. Our findings can provide important information to improve the quantum efficiencies of the CP-based optoelectronic devices.
