Polyethylene-graphitic nanoplatelets (PEGNP) were synthesized via a mechanochemical reaction using graphite and polyethylene. The resultant PEGNP displayed outstanding mechanical properties and dispersed effectively in a variety of organic solvents (i.e. xylene). Due to their chemical compatibility, PEGNP act as reinforcing filler for high density polyethylene (HDPE). PEGNP@HDPE_X nanocomposites, produced through a solution process, exhibited excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability compared to pure HDPE. Specifically, PEGNP@HDPE_2 nanocomposites showed a remarkable increase in tensile strength and Young’s modulus. The exceptional performance of these nanocomposites highlights the potential of PEGNP as advanced reinforcing filler for polymer applications, notably enhancing the mechanical properties of polymers.
