Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis (AEMWE) is considered the most efficient way to convert renewable energy into hydrogen. The high ion conductivity of the AEMs can achieve highly efficient energy conversion. However, conventional AEMs have unsatisfactory ion-conducting ability owing to the low density of their cationic groups that are pendanted to the main polymer backbone. Hence, there is a strong demand for a new AEM architecture with high-density cationic groups. Herein, we propose a one-pot, in-situ interfacially assembled AEM with a unique structure comprising a three-dimensionally crosslinked quaternary ammonium (QA) network with nanovoids. The fabricated AEM exhibited higher AEMWE performance than commercial AEMs owing to its higher ion conductivity resulting from its effective ion channel structure. Our study provides a new method to fabricate high-performance durable AEMs.
