Environmental changes such as global warming have aroused interest in regenerable energy production technologies such as photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for solar water splitting. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by PEC cells is nearly non-valuable, inquires high cell potential (> 1.23 V), and has relatively slow reaction rate compared to hydrogen. Alternative oxidation reactions characterized by lower oxidation potentials and faster reaction rates have been explored to replace the OER. A representative example of alternative oxidation reactions is alcohol oxidation using nitroxyl radical (NR) as a redox mediator. However, this present challenges such as complicated product purification, low solubility of NR, and mass transfer due to the redox mediator being in the electrolyte solution. Therefore, to address these challenges, we have developed alcohol-oxidizing photoanodes by immobilizing NR functional groups, demonstrating remarkable electrochemical catalytic performance.
