Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) were widely used as inorganic UV filters in sunscreen due to their long-lasting UV-blocking performance. However, limited protection spectrum and photo-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation disturbed their practical application. Herein, metal-phenolic network-coated TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-MPN NPs) developed via polyphenol chemistry, which can alleviate photochemical reactivity and extend the absorption region. MPN layer can effectively suppress photo-induced ROS generation of TiO2 through intramolecular stabilization of catechol and galloyl moieties. Also, the TiO2-MPN interface facilitated a new ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) photoexcited pathway, significantly improving UV-to-high energy visible light absorption. Our findings demonstrate that polyphenol chemistry can work for a new promising strategy for inorganic UV filters with enhanced sunblock performance and suppressed photochemically induced toxicity.
