Many sunscreen products are formulated as emulsions for skin protection, and moisturization, especially water-in-oil high internal phase emulsions (W/O HIPEs) for water resistance, long-lasting protection, and improved application properties. For the long-term preservation of such HIPEs, it is important to stabilize the emulsions by introducing a suitable stabilizer. In this study, we thoroughly investigated the impact of hydrophobic coating on spindle-shaped TiO2 particles, well-known UV blockers, as stabilizers for W/O HIPEs, and we also successfully confirmed that the droplet size could be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the modified particles. In addition, the rheological properties of W/O HIPEs, including a linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity and a shear thinning behavior were analyzed to indirectly determine the improved application properties.
