Ion-containing polymers have attracted significant research interest, but improving both their ionic conductivity and mechanical properties simultaneously remains a challenge. One strategy to address this is to create well-connected ion channels within mechanically robust polymer matrix. This can be achieved by introducing acid functional groups that can aggregate to form percolated ion channels. In this study, we present the synthesis and morphologies of various types of bifunctional polymers with controlled molecular interactions. Phosphonic acid groups were precisely introduced into the polymer backbones, and hydroxyl groups were positioned nearby to facilitate effective hydrogen bonding interactions with phosphonic acid groups. These led to intriguing ion clustering behaviors and unique chain conformations due to the formation of intramolecular interactions.
