Switching the Surface of MXene to enable Surface Modification based on General Carbon Chemistry

MXenes are a class of 2D materials known for their unique properties, such as high conductivity and dense surface functional groups. However, transition metal-based surface bonds (M-O, M-OH, etc.) poses challenges for versatile modification compared to carbon materials like graphene oxide, where its diverse functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxylic, carbonyl, etc.), allow easy modification. Thus, if we can somehow introduce carbon chemistry onto MXene surfaces, we can anticipate that surface modification can be much more versatile. Here, we developed a methodology to enable surface modification of MXene based on general carbon chemistry where carbon-based functional groups were designed to provide anchor points for further chemical reactions. As a proof-of-concept, MXene surface was substituted to carboxylic group, then alkyl amines were successfully grafted through peptide bonds. Through our method, we aim to leverage the ease of modification seen in carbon or organic materials.
