Polyaniline/Mo₂TiC₂ MXene Nanocomposites toward Wearable NH₃ Gas Sensors with Enhanced Sensitivity and Humidity Stability

Polyaniline (PANI) is known for high chemical selectivity toward NH₃, making it promising for gas sensing applications. However, it is difficult to solely utilize PANI into gas sensors, needing an efficient support material. In this manner, MXenes, which have excellent conductivity and large surface-to-volume ratio, can be an outstanding partner to form a nanocomposite with PANI. In this study, we highlights the unique advantages of using Mo₂TiC₂ MXene, while many studies have focused only on Ti-based MXenes.
PANI/Mo₂TiC₂ showed up to a 52-fold increase in sensitivity to 100ppm NH₃ compared to PANI, pristine Mo₂TiC₂ MXene, and PANI/Ti3C2. Notably, PANI/Mo₂TiC₂ sensors exhibited a gas response of 57% for 100ppm NH₃ gas and maintained excellent sensitivity even under humid conditions. We further demonstrate an all-printable, and flexible gas sensor where we fabricated electrodes by spray-coating Ti₃C₂ MXene onto polymer substrates and applying PANI/Mo₂TiC₂ as the sensing channel.
