Synthetic polymers having absolutely defined aperiodic sequences comprised of chemically distinct monomers (sequence-defined polymers or SDPs) have long been expected to realize structural and functional mastery exhibited by biological precedents in non-biological environments. Absolutely defined sequences of monomers make SDPs molecular media storing information at vastly superior density (bit/volume) and longevity than conventional media such as magnetic, optical, and electronic devices. To fulfill these promises, however, the development of efficient methods to synthesize SDPs, enabling the precise control of molecular weight, backbone chemistry, and side-chain functionality, is highly anticipated. In this presentation, we report our recent results on the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers and their use for digital information storage.
