Synthesis of cyclic olefin polymers based on oxanorbornene derivatives to enhance thermal properties and optical transparency

Cyclic olefin polymers (COPs) or cyclic olefin copolymers (COCs) has one or more cyclic olefin monomers. Due to the bulky ring, it has better transparency than other transparent plastics. In addition, it has good heat resistance due to the stiffness of the ring and is used in various industrial fields. It is typically used in image sensors, displays, and medical devices.
Here, oxanorbornene-based cyclic olefin monomers having imide groups with high heat resistance properties were synthesized. After that, ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was proceeded using a Grubb’s 2nd generation catalyst. And the polymers were hydrogenated. The chemical structures were confirmed by NMR analysis, and the molecular weights were investigated by GPC measurements. In addition, thermal properties were measured by DSC and TGA. The optical properties were measured by UV-vis spectroscopy in a film state.
