Epoxy resin (EP) is used in many fields due to its excellent adhesion, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. However, the use of EP is limited because EP releases dangerous gases into the air and is very flammable. Therefore, in order to improve the flame retardancy of EP, Hybrid EP/microcapsule composite containing a flame retardant can be suitable material. If a flame retardant material is used as the core in EP/microcapsule composite, the shell can protect the core material and the flame retardant properties of the composite can be improved. In this study, microencapsulated PER (MCPER) was synthesized by using the flame retardant pentaerythritol (PER) as the core material and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the shell. The hybrid EP/MCPER composite was cross-linked and cured with DGEBA and DDM through APTES, a silane coupling agent. The structure, thermal properties, and flame retardancy of hybrid EP/MCPER composite were characterized by various analytical methods.
