Electrophoretic Deposition is a promising technology capable of producing uniform coatings on various and complex metal substrates. Utilizing this technique, we applied polyimide coatings on Cu sheets and wires. The coating solution was prepared by forming polyamic acid salts using a neutralizing agent (NA) to ensure the colloidal stability through polarity control. This study demonstrates the coating thickness can be controlled by NA polarity in addition to applied voltage and deposition time. Interestingly, it is shown that simply applying higher voltage does not increase the coating thickness on Cu wire, in contrast to common expectation, and adjusting NA polarity can be a more efficient way of thickness control in this case. Various experiments were conducted to understand this observation. Additionally, we examined the correlation between coating thickness and electrical properties. Through this, we achieved an ideal coating with high thickness and excellent insulation properties.
