Phase Behavior of Polymer and Nanoparticle stabilized Blue Phase Liquid Crystals

Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) are promising materials for use in next generation displays, optical components, and photonics applications due to their unique optical properties. However, BPLCs are typically observed in a narrow temperature range (0.5-3 oC) and need to be stabilized over a wider temperature range to be used in devices. Here we report on stabilization of BPs by using an amorphous crosslinker or nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes. The addition of the amorphous crosslinker stabilizes the BP and widens the temperature window by up to 10 degrees C. The effect of the crosslinker on electrootic response of the BPLC will be also be discussed. Lastly, our talk will delve into our studies in BPLC compatibility with CdSe nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes, which will include shape and size dependent studies associated with affected compatibility, the optical properties and stabilization of BPLCs.
