Multifunctional TPU composite with high mechanical properties via whole dry process by reactive extrusion(REX) and dry coating

Previous thermoplastic polyurethane composite studies have limitations in mechanical properties and functionality using only interactions between hard segments and fillers, and small production and high-energy processes are still a problem. In this study, we present a new approach for multifunctional thermoplastic polyurethane composites that form chemical bonds with soft segments and fillers. Dry coating and reaction extrusion processes were introduced as high production and reusable processes to improve functionality and reactivity. The yield strength increased by 170% and the elongation increased by 251% compared to the simple mixed composite. In addition, the chemical structure was characterized along with the heat transfer performance and flame retardancy of the multifunctional TPU composite. This study provides a new direction for thermal management and flame retardant materials industries by providing multifunctional composites with a cost-effective, simple process.
