Ionic additives to improve the performance of lithium-metal batteries

As the demand for high-performance lithium-ion batteries increases, various strategies have been proposed to improve device performance. Among them, incorporating additives into electrolytes is considered the simplest but effective approach. Here, we design a new ionic additive and a comprehensive comparison is made with the effect of the corresponding nonionic additive on device performance. The ionic additive including less mobile cation parts strongly interacts with the anions of lithium salts. As a result, lithium ion transference number is notably improved, leading to higher capacity, faster charge-discharge rates, and more stable cycling performance. These results provide useful guidelines for the design of effective electrolyte additives for higher performance batteries.
