Advanced conversion of industrial emissions with silica aerogels in chimney systems

Many studies are being conducted worldwide to address the issue of carbon dioxide emissions. One such study involves using Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to capture carbon dioxide at a concentration of 400 ppm from the atmosphere. One DAC research approach employs amine adsorbents on a support structure. Efforts are also underway to improve the economic efficiency by reusing these adsorbents repeatedly. In our research, we coated a silica-based aerogel with TEPA and an ionic liquid. When coated with 70 wt% TEPA and 2.5 wt% ionic liquid, a high adsorption rate of 2.8 mmol/g was observed for carbon dioxide at 400 ppm concentration at 25°C, and stability was maintained at 1 bar even after 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption. Additionally, by adding Zn2+ to induce a cycloaddition reaction, we achieved complete conversion of carbon dioxide.
