Blends of polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are extensively studied for optical transparency applications due to their compensable properties. However, the thermodynamic incompatibility of PC and PMMA induces opacity from phase separation. Transesterification is a strategy to increase the miscibility between PC and PMMA. In this study, we investigated the processing condition-dependent physical properties of PC/PMMA blends with a transesterification catalyst during reactive extrusion. The temperature, processing time, and the order in which the polymers were added were varied, and the resulting properties were characterized. The mechanism of transesterification was identified through molecular weight changes and NMR analysis depending on the process conditions. Interestingly, we observed structural and physical property differences in the grafted polymers formed depending on the order of polymer input.
