Harnessing the Power of Evolution: Development of Biodegradable Polyurethane

This seminar presents novel advancements in materials science and biotechnology, driven by evolution. The first focus of the study is on "Evolution Empowered Biocomposites: Living Fillers for Sustainable Biodegradation." By incorporating polymer-degrading bacterial spores, which have undergone adaptive laboratory evolution, into thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), a groundbreaking biocomposite material is achieved. These living fillers exhibit exceptional resistance during high-temperature melt processing, resulting in significantly improved tensile properties and toughness of the biocomposites. Moreover, the materials demonstrate remarkable biodegradability, even in composting environments with limited microbial presence. Additionally, the spores retain their programmed function, expressing green fluorescent protein, opening new possibilities for functional biocomposite applications.
